51 Jr Doctors suspended for alleged threat culture from RG Kar, challenge decision in Calcutta High Court

Fifty-one junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have been suspended amid serious allegations of a "threat culture" prevalent within the institution. This suspension has led to significant backlash, prompting the affected doctors to seek legal redress. Calcutta High Court Justice Parthasarathy Sen has permitted them to file a case challenging their suspension, with a hearing scheduled for October 18, 2024.

The controversy surrounding these suspensions erupted following the RG Kar incident, which spotlighted ongoing concerns about the working environment in the state's medical colleges. Allegations have surfaced that several junior doctors, associated with former principal Sandeep Ghosh, engaged in practices that fostered a culture of intimidation. An inquiry committee was subsequently formed to investigate these claims, and it recommended the suspension of the 51 doctors, citing evidence of misconduct and a detrimental working atmosphere.

Around 15 to 20 of the suspended junior doctors met with Kunal Ghosh, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress, multiple times over the past week. During these meetings, the doctors discussed strategies for launching a counter-movement against the hospital’s decision, indicating their intention to mobilize support and voice their grievances once the puja celebrations conclude. The doctors have expressed deep frustration over their situation, claiming they have been wrongfully accused and asserting that critical evidence supporting their innocence has been suppressed by the administration.

Earlier this week, the suspended junior doctors held a press conference where they articulated their concerns regarding the accusations against them. They stated that the environment within the hospital has been increasingly hostile and detrimental to their ability to serve patients effectively. They emphasized their commitment to public service and highlighted the challenges faced by junior doctors in a high-pressure work environment. The doctors argue that the allegations against them are part of a broader trend of silencing voices that genuinely care for patient welfare.

The repercussions of this suspension extend beyond the individuals involved. This incident has sparked widespread discussions about the workplace culture in medical colleges across West Bengal, with many calling for reforms to address the systemic issues contributing to the "threat culture." Stakeholders within the medical community are now advocating for clearer channels of communication and better support systems for junior doctors, who often face immense pressure and scrutiny in their roles.
